Rorschach

Rorschach test also known as the Rorschach inkblot test. The Rorschach technique, is a psychological test in which subjects' perceptions of inkblots are recorded and analyzed using psychological interpretation, complex algorithms, or both. Some psychologists use this test to examine a person's personality characteristics and emotional functioning. The test as also been employed to detect underlying thought disorder, especially in cases where patients are reluctant to describe their thinking processes openly. But, unlike your typical inkblot I use color.

My Rorschach paintings are an experiment to see what color do when put in too the same context. Will people react to a colored Rorschach the same as a black and white one. The thing is we do not all react to color the same way has we do to black and white. Take asian color theory for example.

Asian color theory is based around a theory of the natural elements. Color in Asia holds different symbolic and hierarchical meaning than they do in the west. The five main colors in asian color theory are linked to the five natural elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The associated colors are blue (wood), red (fire), yellow(earth), white (metal), and black (water). All other colors are made from combination of these colors. Every color has a meaning beyond its actual hue. For instance, yellow represents the element of earth, the direction of the center, fidelity and the heat of midsummer. Secondary colors are often developed after the name of a plant or flower they resemble. The other colors are most frequently used in literature include purple, pink, green, brown and gray.

These colors all also have virtues and emotions associated with them. Purple, for instance, was associated with the highest forms of morality, and only the Buddhist clergy could wear robes of that shade.

When it comes down to it there are differences in the way east and west see color. The meaning of color can be very significant. Yellow for instance stands for bravery and friendship in asian culture, where in the west it stands for cowardice. Anther color example would be white. White is considered pure and clean in western culture. In Asia white means death and being a rebel.  As, you can see there are clear difference in the way people see color. So, when looking at my colored Rorschach paintings, think are you thinking in a western or eastern mine sit.
